The Bacon Lane bridge
James Holmshaw, a hammer man in the steel works, said that he had been acquainted with the deceased for four or five years and saw him alive last on Friday night about twenty minutes past ten oâclock in Bacon Lane, near the Canal Bridge. The deceased was not sober and on the witness wishing him âGood Nightâ and asking him where he was going, he replied, âI am going to drown my bloody selfâ (the Telegraph naturally puts a dash for âbloodyâ, so it could have been âfuckingâ, I suppose). Holmshaw did not believe this and proceeded to the Woodbourne Hotel, about 100 yards further on. He then mentioned the circumstance to the landlordâs daughter, who replied that Vail had told her the same thing. The witness immediately decided to go and see what was the matter with him (Vail) and went to the canal bridge. Seeing no one, he whistled and called out Vailâs name, on which the deceased replied, âIâm hereâ and immediately jumped in the water. He then shouted to the witness to fetch him out, but Holmshaw replied, âJoe, I canât; I have a wife and six children and I canât swim.â He then ran to the hotel for assistance but the people would not believe him, so he went to the police station for drags to get the body out. When he got back, however, the body was lying on the bridge. It had been retrieved by another passer-by with a boat-hook.
